I opened the front door, waiting for the usual response when I left my kids in anyone else’s care. Typically, Christina would have a list for me of things she liked and didn’t like.

“Derrick?” I called. “I’m back.”

I closed the front door behind me, reveling in the sweet silence of the house. It was nearly nine a.m. I’d been at the hospital all night with my sister and hadn’t slept a wink. For sixteen hours, I’d held Kai’s hand, prayed, consoled, and cried. It was all worth it.

Kai and Trevon had brought a beautiful baby into the world.

“Derrick?” I peeked into the living room and stopped in my tracks.

The Disney Channel was on, the volume turned low. A sea of mismatched sheets hung from the walls to the sofa and loveseat.

I tiptoed to the couch and peeked beneath the opening that faced the television. Christina and Justin were knocked out; their little bodies stretched in various directions as the television watched them. But where were Derrick and Carlos?

“Good morning,” Derrick said behind me.

I nearly jumped out of my skin. I turned to face him. “You scared me. Where did you come from?”

“The back of the house. I heard you when you pulled into the driveway. Carlos was asleep, so I figured I’d put him in Justin’s room so he wouldn’t wake up at the sound of your voice.” He looked me over. “You look worn out. Want some coffee?”

“I need to sleep. Coffee will keep me up.”

“True. When did you eat last?”

I shrugged. “Um…when we had pizza last night?”

His brow furrowed. “And we barely had time to eat then. You need food, then sleep. I talked to Trevon a little while ago. He told me you were on your way home. Why don’t you take a shower while I whip up some breakfast? Then you can tell me about our new niece.”

“I can do that.” I glanced back at the maze of sheets. “And you can tell me about this.”

He laughed. “Deal.”

As I walked down the hall, I had the strangest feeling. When I turned to enter my room, I risked a peek. Derrick stood in the hallway watching me. Our eyes met for a moment, then held. I smiled, then entered my room.

What was that?

Not wanting to put too much into it, I grabbed a shirt and sweatpants out of the dresser and headed for a shower. It was a struggle not to let out a moan as I stepped under the spray of hot water. Since when did a shower feel like heaven and sin at the same time?

Probably since a hot guy was making me breakfast in the kitchen and sex hadn’t been a part of the mix.

What Derrick had done for me in the past twenty-four hours was a lot more meaningful than sex.

He’d kept me from making an irrational decision when looking for a house. He’d taken the kids and me out to lunch and showed us a good time. And when I needed to spend time with my family, he’d volunteered to watch my kids.
